Growing Humans: The Use of Gardening in Support of Early Childhood Literacy

The most important commodity being grown in a school garden are the experiences of the children involved. While we love harvesting fresh fruits and veggies from our gardens, these spaces have intrinsic educational value.

"Growing Humans" is a 2 hour in person session that can be hosted in your own center.  The session can be expanded to include planning for the implementation of your own raised garden beds, or can focus on utilizing the resources that you already have available.  Gardening can be planning in almost any space.

By the end of the this session, teachers will be able to

  • Identify opportunities in their center for implementation of outdoor gardening space and create a list of materials needed to create this space.

  • Investigate 5 consecutive lesson plans using a book with a garden literacy focus.

  • Practice literacy techniques such as picture walks, echo reading, and prosody.
